Nikolai Mikhailovich was the son of Mikhail Nikolaevich Romanov. He served in the military from 1884 to 1903 and stood apart from court life. He corresponded with L. N. Tolstoy. Nikolai Mikhailovich wrote a number of studies on Russian history of the first quarter of the 19th century. These works were written from a conservative monarchical standpoint but are of interest because of the extensive documentary material they contain. Nikolai Mikhailovich helped to publish a number of books that are important in historical and cultural respects: Diplomatic Relations Between Russia and France According to the Reports of the Ambassadors of Emperors Alexander and Napoleon (1808–1812) (vols. 1–7, 1905–14); The Correspondence of Emperor Alexander I and His Sister, Grand Duchess Ekaterina Pavlovna (1910); Russian Portraits of the XVIII and XIX Centuries (vols. 1–5, 1905–09); The St. Petersburg Necropolis (vols. 1–4, 1912–13); and The Moscow Necropolis (vols. 1–3, 1907–08).
