Established: 2003.
Location:In the southern Appalachian Mountains between Atlanta, Georgia, and Birmingham, Alabama.
Special Features:Only mountain refuge in southeastern U.S. was formerly part of Fort McClellan military training base. Refuge is being surveyed to determine where unexploded ordnance exist and what must be done to make refuge lands safe for visitors.
Habitats: 9,016 acres old-growth mountain longleaf pine forest.
Access: 3,000 acres open during daylight hours. The other 6,000 acres will be open once environmental cleanup is complete.
Wild life: Endangered gray bat and red-cockaded woodpecker, scarlet tanagers and ovenbirds.
