La Salle, René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de

 

Born Nov. 22, 1643, in Rouen; died Mar. 19, 1687, in Louisiana. French colonial entrepreneur, explorer of waterways of the North American interior.

La Salle arrived in Montreal, Canada, in 1667. He discovered the Ohio River in 1669. Proceeding westward through the Great Lakes, he reached the Illinois River in 1678. In 1681 he traced the course of the Mississippi River from the mouth of the Illinois to the sea and declared its basin a French possession, naming it Louisiana.
