Yahya Kemal Beyatli

Beyatli, Yahya Kemal

 

Born Dec. 2, 1884, in Üsküb; died Nov. 1, 1958. Turkish poet and statesman.

Beyatli lived in Paris from 1903 to 1912. After returning to Turkey he worked as a teacher. He was repeatedly elected deputy of the Majlis; he served as a Turkish envoy to Poland, Spain, and other countries. He primarily wrote ghazals. His love and nature lyrics are perfect in composition and permeated with subjective and idealistic ideas of the world. The Yahya Kemal Society and the Yahya Kemal Museum-Institute were established after his death.
