optical moment optical moment[′äp·tə·kəl ′mō·mənt] (optics) For a ray of light passing through an optical system, the triple product of a vector from an arbitrary origin on the optical axis to a point on the ray, a vector tangent to the ray at that point whose length equals the refractive index, and a unit vector along the optical axis; it does not depend on the point on the ray. |
