metanalysis
metanalysis (ˌmɛtəˈnælɪsɪs) n (Linguistics) the act of changing the division between two words, as in the change from 'a nadder' to 'an adder'met•a•nal•y•sis (ˌmɛt əˈnæl ə sɪs) n., pl. -ses (-ˌsiz) a shift in the division between words in a phrase; misdivision: “A nickname” resulted from metanalysis of “an ekename.” [1910–15] Metanalysis
Metanalysis the rearrangement of morpheme boundaries in a word or word group. A single morpheme may become two successive morphemes, and two or more successive morphemes may become one by de-etymologization; a shift in morpheme boundaries frequently occurs. Metanalysis is seen in the Russian proforma (“formality”), which derives from the Latin pro forma (“for the sake of form”); the Russian s nim (“with him,” “with it”), which derives from the Old Russian sõn imõ; and the French m’amie (“my girlfriend”), which derives from ma mie (“my dear”). |
