Lancefield's streptococcal classification

A division of STREPTOCOCCI (see STREPTOCOCCUS) into four groups on the basis of the antigenic differences in the polysaccharide structure of the cell walls of the organisms. Group A, Streptococcus pyogenes , are the most dangerous. (Rebecca Craighill Lancefield, 1895–1981, American bacteriologist).
