La Micoque

a Lower Paleolithic site near the city of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac in southwestern France (Dordogne Department).

La Micoque has been investigated since 1895. The lower cultural layers pertain to the transition period from the Acheulean to the Mousterian and contain shapeless, atypical flint tools. Similar tools, which are widespread in a number of other settlements dating from the same time, have acquired the name Taya-cian after this site. The upper layer dates from the late Acheulean period or early Mousterian period. Numerous bones of wild horses, which were hunted by the site’s inhabitants, were found here. Of the stone tools, the most interesting are the small and elongated hand axes, worked on both sides, which have been called Micoquian-type hand axes. Habitation sites with such axes are called Micoquian.
