Nazim Nabizade

Nabizade, Nazim

Born 1862 in Istanbul; died there Aug. 6, 1893. Turkish writer. One of the first representatives of the realistic school in Turkish literature.

Nabizade graduated from the military academy in Istanbul in 1886. He became an instructor of mathematics and military science and served on the General Staff. He began to publish in 1880 and won acclaim as a writer of novels and short stories. His story “Kara Bibik” (1890) reflects the everyday life and psychology of the Anatolian peasant and reveals the social inequality in the Turkish village. The life of the working classes of Istanbul is the subject of the novel Zehra (1896), in which, however, Nabizade did not treat social problems but limited himself to describing the experiences of the novel’s main characters.
