LycopodialesLycopodiales[‚lī·kə·pō·dī′ā·lēz]Lycopodialesan order of higher sporophytic plants. The stems are short or long, usually ramose, and decumbent or sub-erect. The leaves, or phylloids, are scalelike or subulate, and the budlike sporangia are arranged on the upper side of the base of the sporophylls. There are two families: the Lycopodiaceae, whose sporangia are usually gathered into flat spikelets, and the Huperziaceae, whose stalks branch dichotomously two or four times and whose axillary sporangia are not gathered into flat spikelets. The family Lycopodiaceae has four genera, embracing approximately 200 species; the family Huperziaceae is represented by one genus (Lycopodium selago), which has approximately 150 species.
