(noibrän`dənbûrk'), city (1994 pop. 95,540), Mecklenburg–West Pomerania, NE Germany, on the Tollensesee. Manufactures include paper, chemicals, wood, leather, and food products; engineering industries are important. Founded in 1248 by the margraves of Brandenburg, Neubrandenburg passed to Mecklenburg in 1292. Most of its medieval buildings were destroyed during World War II, and the city has generally been rebuilt along modern lines.

a district in the northeastern part of the German Democratic Republic. Area, 10,800 sq km. Population, 634,600 (1972), 56.2 percent of which is urban. The district occupies the eastern part of the Mecklenburg Lakes Region.

Neubrandenburg is the German Democratic Republic’s least industrially developed district, accounting for only 1.6 percent of the country’s industrial output. A total of 27.2 percent of the district’s work force is engaged in industry and the trades, including construction, 31.9 percent in agriculture and forestry, 6.7 percent in transportation and communications, and 11.9 percent in commerce (1972). The chief branches of industry of national importance are food processing (56.8 percent of the district’s industrial output), general and transportation machine building (20 percent), light industry, the wood-products industry, and the production of building materials. The district produces a significant amount of surplus agricultural products.

Farmland occupies 61.2 percent of the total area, of which 46.4 percent is arable lands, and 14 percent meadows and pastures. Forests cover 23 percent of Neubrandenburg. Such grain crops as rye, oats, barley, and wheat predominate. More than one-quarter of the arable land is planted with potatoes, sugar beets, and root crops. The raising of hogs, dairy cattle, and sheep is well developed, as is beekeeping. The southwestern part of the district, with its numerous lakes, is a popular resort area.

Population, 53,000 (1972). Neubrandenburg’s industries include machine building, food processing, and the production of building materials. The city has an institute of agricultural sciences and an institute of agricultural economics, both of which are part of the university in Greifswald.
