Merleau-Ponty Maurice (1908-61) French existentialist and phenomenological philosopher and social theorist, influenced by HUSSERL, who also worked with de BEAUVOIR and SARTRE. Influenced also by MARXISM he was critical both of conceptions of DETERMINISM and conceptions of the ultimate AUTONOMY of the SUBJECT. In the Phenomenology of Perception (trans. 1962, originally 1945) he affirmed the existence of a world independent of consciousness but a world on which the conscious agent acts, endowing it with meaning and with form.
