Moore, Clarence Bloomfield

Moore, Clarence Bloomfield

(1852–1936) archaeologist; born in Philadelphia. He was a wealthy socialite and international traveler who toured Europe and Asia Minor, crossed the Andes, and navigated the Amazon before turning to archaeology. He proved a meticulous fieldworker; of his many studies of Indian mounds throughout South-eastern U.S.A., his excavations of the St. John's shell middens in Florida (1892–94) were of particular value.
