Montian Stage

(named after the city of Mons, Belgium), the lowest stage of the Paleogene system. It was identified in 1868 by the Belgian geologist G. Dewalque. The type section is composed of limestones with bivalve and gastropod mollusks. In the Paris basin “pisolitic limestone “corresponds to the Montian stage, while in the USSR the Inkerman stage, beds of which are developed in the Crimea (limestones with mollusks) roughly corresponds to it.
