Krivoi Rog Metallurgical Works
Krivoi Rog Metallurgical Works
(full name, V. I. Lenin Krivoi Rog Metallurgical Works), a large ferrous-metallurgy enterprise in the USSR; located in Krivoi Rog, Dnepropetrovsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Construction began in 1931 based on ore from the Krivoi Rog Iron Ore Basin. Before the Great Patriotic War (1941–45) three blast furnaces and a Bessemer mill with two converters were put into operation. During the early period of the war part of the equipment was evacuated to the Urals. During the fascist German occupation of Krivoi Rog (Aug. 15,1941, to Feb. 22, 1944), the works was destroyed. After the war it was restored, rebuilt, and enlarged. New mills and powerful new units were put into operation (four blast furnaces, one of which has a volume of 2,700 cu m). A blast furnace with a volume of 5,000 cu m is under construction (1973). There are two oxygen-converter plants. The works is equipped with large rolling mills. Production processes are mechanized and auto-mated to a significant degree. In 1960 the works was named after V. I. Lenin. It was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1971 and Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1939.
