Krasnotur’insk
(until 1944, the settlement of Tur’inskie Rudniki), a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR, situated on the Tur’ia River (Ob’ Basin). A railroad station on the SerovSeveroural’sk line. Population, 58,000 (1972).
The Bogoslovskii Aluminum Plant (began production in 1945), which uses bauxites from the Northern Urals (the Krasnaia Shapochka deposit), is in Krasnotur’insk. There is a steam power plant. Copper and iron ore are mined; there are concentration mills. The general technology department of the Urals Polytechnic Institute, an industrial technicum, and medical and music schools are located in the city.
Krasnotur’insk arose in the second half of the 18th century. In 1894 the Russian scientist and mineralogist E. S. Fedorov founded the geological and mineralogical museum that bears his name. Krasnotur’insk is the birthplace of the inventor of the radio, A. S. Popov; his house has been turned into a memorial museum.
