Lavrentii Zagoskin

Zagoskin, Lavrentii Alekseevich

 

Born May 21 (June 2), 1808; died Jan. 22 (Feb. 3), 1890. Russian naval officer, explorer of Alaska.

Zagoskin graduated from the Naval Cadet School and served in St. Petersburg and Astrakhan. In 1839 he transferred to service in the Russian-American Company. In 1842-44 he led an expedition to Alaska, exploring mainly the Kwikpak and Kuskokwim rivers. The results of the expedition were published in The Survey on Foot of Part of the Russian Possessions in America Made in 1842, 1843, and 1844 (parts 1-2, 1847-48), republished in 1956 as TheTravels and Explorations of Lieutenant Lavrentii Zagoskin in Russian America in 1842-44.
