Krasin

a line icebreaker of the Arctic Fleet of the USSR. Built in Great Britain in 1917. Water displacement, 10,800 tons; length, 94.5 m; width, 21.6 m. It was seized by the British interventionists in 1918 but returned to Soviet Russia in 1921. Called Sviatogor until 1927, the ship was renamed in honor of L. B. Krasin.

The Krasin participated in the rescue of the members of U. Nobile’s Italian expedition in 1928. In 1932 it made the first winter navigation in the Arctic Ocean (in the eastern part of the Pechora Sea) and in 1933 was the first ship to reach the northern extremity of Novaia Zemlia in winter. In 1934—35 it was part of hydrological research in the De Long Strait and in the East Siberian and Chukchi seas. During the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), the Krasin escorted ships in the Arctic Ocean. In the early 1970’s it was converted to an expeditionary research ship.
