Lethbridge, Francis Donald

(1921–2008)A Washington, DC, architect who led the preservation movement in the nation’s capital. While his own works were unabashedly modern, Lethbridge designed the 1989 Visitors Center at Arlington National Cemetery as well as multifamily housing, churches, institutional buildings, and the U.S. embassy in Lima, Peru. Lethbridge compiled the first list of DC-area buildings and sites the group wanted to save. Among the 292 entries were Union Station, the Old Executive Office Building, and the boundary stones placed at one-mile intervals around the city in 1792.
