Established: 1944.
Location:In Nantucket Sound, south from the elbow of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails.
Activities:Fishing, shellfishing, hiking.
Special Features:Harbor and gray seals haul out on refuge beaches in winter. Ninety-four percent of the refuge is designated wilderness area.
Habitats: 7,604 acres on three barrier beach islands, consisting of sand dunes, freshwater ponds, and salt and freshwater marshes.
Access: Open year round during daylight hours. A portion of Morris Island accessible by causeway; North and South Monomoy islands are accessible by boat only.
Wild life: Migratory birds, including the threatened piping plover and endangered roseate tern, red knot and horseshoe crab.
