Otaru (ōtä`ro͞o), city (1990 pop. 163,211), SW Hokkaido, Japan, on Ishikari Bay. A major port and Hokkaido's main commercial and industrial center, Otaru is the site of the Asarigawa Spa and the Otaru Aquarium.Otaru an international trade and passenger port city in Japan on the west side of the island of Hokkaido, on Ishikari Bay of the Sea of Japan. Population, 192,000 (1970). Otaru together with Sapporo constitutes a single industrial zone. The city is a commercial center and has a university. |
