Kolthoff, Izaak Maurits
Born Feb. 11, 1894, in Almelo, the Netherlands. American analytical chemist.
Kolthoff graduated from the University of Utrecht in 1915 and worked in the Netherlands until 1927. From 1927 to 1962 he was a professor of analytical chemistry and dean at the University of Minnesota (USA). He became a professor emeritus in 1962. His major works have been devoted to the study of the oxidation-reduction indicators and the theory of their application; to potentiometric, conductometric, amperometric, and polarographic titration; the properties of crytalline precipitates; and the kinetics and mechanism of emulsion polymerization. He is the author of textbooks on quantitative analysis and monographs on physical methods in chemical analysis. Kolthoff has been chairman of the committee on analytical chemistry of the National Research Council of the USA (beginning in 1947) and vice-president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
