MegadermatidaeMegadermatidae[‚meg·ə·dər′mad·ə‚dē]Megadermatidaea family of bats of the suborder Microchiroptera. The body is 6.5-14 cm long; there is no tail. They have an elongated leaf-shaped leathery appendage on the nose. There are three genera and five species, distributed in Central Africa, South Asia, Australia, and the Philippines. The majority are nocturnal. During the day they are found in caves, rock crevices, buildings, and tree hollows and crowns. They are solitary or gather in groups of as many as 50-100 individuals. Their diet consists of insects and small vertebrates. They reproduce once a year, giving birth to one offspring. Megadermatidae
