a Soviet research institution of the Urals Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the city of Sverdlovsk. Founded in 1961 as the Sverdlovsk Division of the V. A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, it became part of the Urals Scientific Center in 1971. The institute’s principal areas of research are the mathematical theory of control processes; theoretical investigations in algebra, differential equations, and the theory of functions; the development and solution of problems on computers; the development of methods for nonlinear mechanics; and the development of mathematical methods for continuum mechanics. The institute has a postgraduate program.
