Moltar
Moltar (pop culture)Of the maleficent miscreants in Space Ghost's rogues' gallery—including Creature King, robot master Metallus, Black Widow (Spider-Woman) and her spider monsters, the sleep-inducing bandits Lurker and One-Eye, and Lokar, King of the Killer Locusts—Moltar was handpicked by the star-spanning paragon … to be a talk-show director. His roots were not behind the camera, but instead were based in unleashing interstellar malice. Premiering in “The Ovens of Moltar” (original airdate: September 10, 1966) on Hanna-Barbera's Space Ghost and Dino Boy cartoon (1966–1968), this warped genius (whose face is concealed by a red-and-gray protective helmet) commands troops of lava-men, one of which disables a craft piloted by teenagers Jan and Jace. When their mentor Space Ghost scurries to their aid, the ensuing conflict between the hero and Moltar climaxes with an eruption of the villain's volcanic world. Whether Moltar is a human mutant or an alien is unknown, but as a molten man he emits blistering temperatures quelled only by his containment suit. After several Space Ghost skirmishes Moltar was incarcerated on Ghost Planet, but he was paroled when the hero changed careers to become the celebrity-interviewing host of the cable comedy Space Ghost: Coast to Coast (1994–2004), a spoof mixing animation and live action. Moltar, forced into indentured servitude as the show's inattentive director voiced by C. Martin Croker, was usually seen inside the studio's control room, where he preferred watching CHiPs reruns over performing his directorial tasks. Moltar appeared as a Coast to Coast action figure in the early 2000s. |
