Norden, Carl Lucas

(1880–1965) mechanical engineer; born in Semarang, Java. He emigrated to the U.S.A. from Switzerland in 1904. He worked for Sperry Gyroscope (1911–17) but formed his own company in 1915. In 1911 he developed the first gyrostabilizing equipment for U.S. ships. He is known for contributions to military hardware. In 1927 he produced the first Norden bombsight, which allowed precision bombing.
