Manglisi

 

an urban-type settlement in Tetri-Tskaro Raion, Georgian SSR. Located on the southern slopes of the Trialeti Range, on the Tbilisi-Bogdanovka highway, 56 km west of Tbilisi. It is a mountain resort lying at about 1,200 m above sea level. Manglisi has a subtropical climate, with warm summers (average temperature in July, 19°C) and mild winters (average temperature in January, — 2°C). Annual precipitation is 700 mm. The principal therapeutic means is climatotherapy. There are sanatoriums for the treatment of children and adolescents with respiratory ailments (including those of tuberculous origin), functional disorders of the nervous system, and anemia. Manglisi has a branch of the Tbilisi Isani Footwear Factory and a meat and dairy sovkhoz. It is one of the most ancient cities in Georgia. In the fourth century it was part of Kartli. The battle of Didgori, in which Georgian and Turkish troops took part and which ended in defeat for the Turks, was fought near Manglisi in 1121.
