Nadym

 

a city under okrug jurisdiction, the center of Nadym Raion, Yamal Nenets National Okrug, Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR. Population, 15,000 (1972). Nadym is the center of a major natural gas producing region that includes the Medvezh’e deposit. As of 1974, a gas pipeline was under construction to connect Nadym with Punga and the Urals. The city was established in 1972.

a river in the Yamal-Nenets NO, Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR. Length, 545 km; basin area, 64,000 sq km. Rising from Lake Numto in the upland Siberian Uvals, it flows north along the West Siberian Plain and empties into the Ob’ Guba (inlet) of the Kara Sea. It is fed largely by snow. The mean flow rate at the mouth is 590 cu m per sec. The river freezes in October, and the ice breaks up at the end of May. Its largest tributary is the Levaia Khetta. The Nadym is rich in fish, particularly the peled (Coregonus peled). It is navigable from the city of Nadym. The Nadym basin is the site of the large Medvezh’e natural gas deposit.
