Kirovsk
(kē`rəfsk), city (1989 pop. 43,500), N European Russia, on the Kola Peninsula. The city is the center of a mining complex that produces apatite and nephelite, raw materials for the superphosphate and aluminum industries. It was founded in 1929 as Khibinogorsk.Kirovsk
(until 1934, Khibinogorsk; renamed in honor of S. M. Kirov), city (since 1931) in Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. Situated in spurs of the Khibiny range, on the shore of Lake Bol’shoi Bud’iavr. The terminus of a 22-km railroad branch from the city of Apatity. Population, 38,000 (1970). During the 1920’s rich deposits of apatite and nepheline were discovered in the Khibiny Mountains by a party led by Academician A. E. Fersman, and mining was begun in 1929.
Kirovsk itself has mines, an ore-dressing plant, and a furniture factory. Scientific and educational institutions include an evening branch of the Leningrad Mining Institute, a mining technicum, a medical school, and the lukspor meteorological station for the study of avalanches. The house where Kirov directed plans for the development of local apatite deposits in 1929 is now a museum in his honor. Kirovsk is also the site of the most northerly polar-alpine botanical gardens in the world.

a city (since 1962) in Voroshilovgrad Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, on the Lugan’ River (a tributary of the Severskii Donets), 4 km from the Golubovka railroad station on the Kamyshevakha-Debal’tsevo line. Population, 45,000 (1970). Coal is mined there. There are also food-processing enterprises and a mining-transport technicum.

a city (until 1953, the settlement of Nevdubstroi) in Leningrad Oblast, RSFSR. Landing on the left bank of the Neva River, 52 km from Leningrad. Railroad station (Nevdubstroi). There is a plant for the production of reinforced-concrete structures. Kirovsk also has a State Regional Electric Power Plant.

an urban-type settlement in Lenkoran’ Raion, Azerbaijan SSR, 12 km northwest of Lenkoran’. It was established in 1932 in connection with the organization of a sovkhoz for the cultivation of tea. There is a tea-processing factory.

an urban-type settlement in Tedzhen Raion, Mary Oblast, Turkmen SSR. It is located in the Tedzhen oasis, 36 km north of the Tedzhen railroad station on the Mary-Ashkhabad line. There is a people’s amateur theater. Cotton is grown in the region.
