Kirat
Kirat
(also Kiranti or Rai), a nationality living mainly in the eastern part of mountainous Nepal. Groups of Kirat also live in Sikkim and Bhutan. In Nepal there are about 325,000 Kirat (1971, estimate). Their language is Rai, which belongs to the Tibeto-Burman group of languages. They profess Hinduism and Buddhism (Lamaism), although ancient ancestral and tribal cults also continue to exist. Hoe agriculture is the principal occupation. The Kirat also engage in livestock-raising and hunting.
