K0070300 (kĭngz′pôrt′) A city of northeast Tennessee east of the Cumberland Gap on the Holston River near Bristol and Johnson City. It developed as a staging area for the Wilderness Road and a flatboat port.

city (1990 pop. 36,365), Hawkins and Sullivan counties, NE Tenn., on the Holston River near the Va. line; inc. 1917. Industries include one of the largest printing and bookbinding plants in the United States. Chemicals, plastics, paper, concrete, and glass are also produced. The city, which is encircled by mountains, stands on the site of forts Robinson (1761) and Patrick Henry (1775) on the old Wilderness Road.

One of the largest printing centers in the USA, the city also produces paper, chemicals, textiles (artificial and synthetic fabrics), and leather footwear. Food-processing is also important.
