Ornithonyssus Ornithonyssus (ōr-ni-thon'i-sŭs), A genus of bird and rodent mites; species include Ornithonyssus bacoti, the tropical rat mite, a possible vector of murine typhus and a cause of human dermatitis; Ornithonyssus bursa, the tropical fowl mite; and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, the northern fowl mite.
