Translations

adenovirus

[¦ad·ən‚o′vī·rəs] (virology) Adenoviridae

adenovirus

adenovirus

[ad´ĕ-no-vi″rus] any of a large group of viruses causing disease of the upper respiratory tract and conjunctiva, and also present in latent infections in normal persons; many induce malignancy in certain species. Along with many rhinovirus subspecies and the picornaviruses, adenoviruses are among the causes of the common cold. adj., adj adenovi´ral.

ad·e·no·vi·rus

(ad'ĕ-nō-vī'rŭs), Adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival or A-P-C virus; any virus of the family Adenoviridae. More than 40 types are known to infect humans, causing upper respiratory symptoms, acute respiratory disease (ARD), conjunctivitis, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC), gastroenteritis, hemorrhagic cystitis, and serious infections in neonates, including APC virus. Synonym(s): A-P-C virus, adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival virus [G. adēn, gland, + virus]

adenovirus

(ăd′n-ō-vī′rəs)n. Any of a group of DNA-containing viruses that cause conjunctivitis and upper respiratory tract infections in humans.
ad′e·no·vi′ral adj.

Adenovirus

A group of medium-sized (90–100 nm) non-enveloped icosahedral viruses, with a nucleocapsid surrounding a double-stranded DNA genome. Adenoviridae family has 5 genera, of which one, Mastadenovirus, contains 56 serotypes divided in 7 species (A to G) that infect humans, causing up to 10% of upper respiratory infections in children in developed nations. Clinical response to adenoviruses ranges from none to severe (e.g., with serotype 14). Recombinant forms of adenovirus are used as gene delivery vectors.

adenovirus

Any of a family of > 40 icosahedral–20-sided nonenveloped DNA viruses with a 36 kb genome, which has 'early' genes that encode regulatory proteins, and 'late' genes that encode structural proteins Gene therapy Adenovirus is '…particularly attractive as a vector (for gene therapy), as it can produce large amounts of highly purified recombinant virus, which efficiently infects differentiated cells'; the virus is engineered to ensure that it remains in the desired location by replacing the early genes with the genes of interest–eg, CFTR–cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene Virology Adenovirus can cause common cold, noninfluenzal acute respiratory disease, pneumonia, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, acute febrile pharyngitis, acute hemorrhagic cystitis Diagnosis Indirect methods–antibodies; direct methods–adenovirus antigens by immune–antigen-antibody reactions; viral culture is too time-consuming to be practical. See EIA.

ad·e·no·vi·rus

(ad'ĕ-nō-vī'rŭs) Any virus of the family Adenoviridae. More than 40 types are known to infect humans, causing upper respiratory symptoms, acute respiratory disease, conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, hemorrhagic cystitis, and serous infections in neonates.
Synonym(s): adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival virus.
[G. adēn, gland, + virus]

adenovirus

One of a family of over 30 different DNA viruses which infects man, causing colds, sore throat, CONJUNCTIVITIS and sometimes PNEUMONIA and GASTROENTERITIS.

adenovirus

a type of virus responsible for several acute infections of the respiratory system. The name derives from the adenoid tissues, where the virus is often found.

Adenovirus

One type of virus that can cause upper respiratory tract infections.Mentioned in: Conjunctivitis, Myocarditis

adenovirus

A DNA virus, composed of over 40 serotypes. Many serotypes cause ocular infection, including epidemic keratoconjunctivitis caused by serotypes 8, 19 and 37. Other infections include follicular conjunctivitis with or without pseudomembranes and epithelial keratitis. The adenovirus can be identified using, among others, conjunctival swabs for viral antigen. See acute conjunctivitis.

ad·e·no·vi·rus

(ad'ĕ-nō-vī'rŭs) Adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival or A-P-C virus; many types infect humans, causing upper respiratory symptoms, acute respiratory disease (ARD), conjunctivitis, and other diseases.[G. adēn, gland, + virus]
