Kinderhook

(kĭn`dərho͝ok'), village (1990 pop. 1,293), Columbia co., SE N.Y.; settled before the Revolution, inc. 1838. Richard UpjohnUpjohn, Richard,
1802–78, American architect, b. England. He came to the United States in 1829. A skilled cabinetmaker and draftsman, he lived first in Manlius, N.Y., and then in New Bedford, Mass., where he set himself up as an architect.

 designed St. Paul's Church (1851) there. President Martin Van Buren was born and is buried in Kinderhook; the Van Buren homestead, "Lindenwald," is south of the village. The House of History, maintained by the county historical society, occupies an early 19th-century mansion.
