Location:Northeast corner of California, just south of Alturas.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails, auto tour route.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Fed by snowmelt from the Warner Mountains, the Pit River creates an oasis for wildlife in the high desert of northeastern California--Modoc NWR.
Habitats: 7,000 acres of freshwater lakes and ponds, farmland and irrigated meadwos, sagebrush upland and riparian corridors.
Access: Open daily during daylight hours.
Wild life: Waterfowl, including Canada geese, mallards, cinnamon teal, wigeons, and pintails. Also provides habitat for white pelicans, rabbits, kanagaroo rats, beaver, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, lizards, toads, frogs and snakes.
