Omutninsk

 

a city (since 1921); center of Omutninsk Raion, Kirov Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Omutnaia River, not far from its influx into the Viatka River. Railroad station (Stal’naia) on the Iar-Lesnaia branch of the Kirov-Perm’ line. Population, 29,000 (1974). Omutninsk has a metallurgical plant that was established in 1773 and was completely rebuilt and expanded during the years of Soviet power. There are also three logging and timber distribution establishments, a plant producing rein-forced-concrete items, a dairy, a meat-packing plant, and a bakery combine. Omutninsk has a medical school and a teachers college.
