spinnbarkeit
spinnbarkeit [spin´bahr-kīt] (Ger.) the formation of a thread by mucus from the cervix uteri when spread onto a glass slide and drawn out by a coverglass; the time at which it can be drawn to the maximum length usually precedes or coincides with the time of ovulation. Cervical mucus changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Spinnbarkeit describes how much mucus can be stretched between two fingers or between a microscope slide and coverslip. From McKinney et al., 2000.spinn·bar·keit (spin'bahr-kīt), The stringy, elastic character of cervical mucus during the ovulatory period; in contrast to other times in the menstrual cycle, cervical secretions at midcycle are clear, abundant, and of low viscosity. [Ger. spinnbar, fit for spinning + keit, ness] The ‘stretchability’ of cervical mucus, or the length that strands of cervical mucus reach before breaking—6 cm—a reaction that parallels ‘ferning’ reaction, and peaks on the 14th day—ovulation—of the menstrual cyclespinnbarkeit German, stretchability Gynecology The 'stretchability' of cervical mucus, or the length that strands of cervical mucus reach before breaking–≥ 6 cm, a reaction that parallels 'ferning' reaction, peaking on the 14th day–ovulation of the menstrual cycle. See Ferning. Cf String test. spinn·bar·keit (spin'bahr-kīt) The property of cervical mucus that permits it to be drawn out in strings; indicative of estrogenic effect, and most pronounced during the ovulatory period.
