Established: Authorized on December 22, 1980. Administered in cooperation with several Hawaii state agencies.
Location:On the central northern coast of the Island of Molokai, Hawaii.
Facilities:Museum/exhibit.
Activities:The National Park Service does not offer any regularly scheduledinterpretive programs or activities because of the restricted nature ofvisitation to the park. Tours of the park are offered through acommercial service, owned and operated by a Kalaupapa resident.
Special Features:Park contains the site of the Molokai Island Hansen's disease (leprosy) settlement (1866-1969), areas relating to early Hawaiian settlement, scenic and geological resources, and habitats for rare and endangered species. The churches of Siloama, established in 1866 and St. Philomena, begunin 1872 and associated with the work of Father Damien (JosephDeVeuster) are located at Kalawao. Father Damien's life and death amonghis people foccussed the attention of the world on the problem of thisdisease and the plight of its victims.
