(1943– ) editor, author; born in Washington, D.C. Joining the Washington Post as a summer intern (1963), he worked his way up through the reporting/editorial ranks; over the years he distinguished himself as an overseas correspondent in London (1964–66), Saigon (1969), and Moscow (1971–74), and on the national staff (1975–82). Named assistant managing editor of national news (1985), then deputy managing editor (1990), he was the author of several books on the former Soviet Union including Russia from the Inside and Why Gorbachev Happened.
