Born Feb. 16, 1897, in the village of Wróblin, Silesia; died there Dec. 14, 1972. Polish painter.
Cybis was a representative of the postimpressionist movement that is sometimes called colorism. He studied at the Wroclaw Academy of Fine Arts from 1919 to 1921 and at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts from 1921 to 1924. Cybis painted in Paris from 1924 to 1934. In 1945 he became a professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.
Cybis painted landscapes and still lifes in a free, energetic style with cheerful and harmonious colors. Among his best works are Gdańsk (1959, National Museum, Warsaw) and Stary Soncz (1959–60, National Museum, Poznań;).
