Johannes Eugenius Warming

Warming, Johannes Eugenius

 

Born Nov. 3, 1841, on Mano Island; died Apr. 2, 1924, in Copenhagen. Danish ecological botanist and taxonomist.

Warming was a professor at the university and director of the botanical garden in Copenhagen (1885-1911). He was one of the founders of the ecological orientation in botany. In his work O ecology of Plants (1896; Russian translation, 1901), he showed the variety of the morphological adaptations of plants to their conditions of habitation and described various life forms. Warming’s textbooks Plant Taxonomy (1879; Russian translation, 1893) and The Plant and Its Life (1900: Russian translation, 1904) were widely used in Russia.
