Karay, Refik Halid
Born in 1888, in Istanbul. Turkish writer and journalist; publisher of satirical newspapers and magazines. Publicist, satirist, and humorist.
In his short stories Karay exposed the cruelty, ignorance, and banality that reign in the provincial towns of Turkey. Some of Karay’s works have noticeable anti-imperialist tendencies. He is the author of the novels Watch Out, Don’t Be Deceived, Don’t Believe, Avoid Temptation (1915) and A Handful of Nonsense (1939), and the collections of short stories A Swallow of Water (1939), Exile (1941), A Plea to God (1944), The Key (1947), and This Is Our Life (1950).
