Arsenii Matseevich
Arsenii Matseevich
(secular name, Alexander). Born 1697; died 1772. Church leader.
In 1741, Arsenii became metropolitan of Siberia. Beginning in 1742 he was metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl, as well as a member of the Synod. He spoke out against the Spiritual Regulation of 1721, since he was for the elimination of laymen from the Synod. After transmitting two letters to the Synod in which he opposed secularization, Arsenii was deprived of his diocese, and in 1767 he was expelled from his monastic status and imprisoned in the Revel Fortress.
