Kerby, William (Joseph)

(1870–1936) Catholic priest, sociologist; born in Lawler, Iowa. Ordained in 1892, he earned a doctorate from Louvain and taught at Catholic University (1906–17); as an official of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, he promoted "scientific charity," or professionalism in the church's administration of social programs. He became a monsignor in 1934.
