Jara, Heriberto

 

Born June 10, 1879, in Orizaba; died Apr. 17, 1968, in Mexico City. Mexican statesman and public figure. General.

Jara took part in the Mexican Revolution of 1910–17. From 1934 to 1940 he was a member of the government of L. Cárdenas y del Río, and from 1941 to 1946 he was minister of the navy. Jara was active in the struggle for peace, and in 1950 he became a member of the World Peace Council. He was named honorary president of the Mexican Committee in Defense of Peace. In 1951, Jara was awarded the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Between Nations.
