Jooseppi Julius Mikkola

Mikkola, Jooseppi Julius

 

Born July 6, 1866, in Lake Volo; died Sept. 28, 1946, in Helsinki. Finnish linguist; specialist in the comparative grammar of the Slavic languages.

Mikkola was a professor of Slavic philology at the University of Helsinki from 1900 to 1934. He was concerned with Slavic studies (his Proto-Slavic Grammar, vols. 1–3, 1913–50, is especially well known), including accentuation in the Slavic languages and ties between the Slavic and Balto-Finnic languages. His other fields were Finno-Ugric studies, the Baltic and Germanic languages, and the prehistory of Northern and Eastern Europe. He became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1925.
