Zander, Jonas Gustav Vilhelm
Born Mar. 29, 1835, in Stockholm; died there June 17, 1920. Swedish physiotherapist; founder of mechanotherapy. Academician of the Swedish Academy of Sciences (1896).
Zander studied medicine at the University of Uppsala from 1855 to 1860. In 1865 he founded the world’s first medical institute of mechanotherapy for restoring the functions of joints and muscles after traumatic injuries and for treating metabolic disorders with active-passive exercises. Zander constructed various types of exercising apparatus whose action is based on the lever principle.
