Based on two books by Mary Norton, The Magic Bedknob (J. M. Dent, 1945) and Bonfires

and Broomsticks (J. M. Dent, 1947), the 1971 Disney movie was directed by Robert Stevenson and starred Angela Landsbury and David Tomlinson. It tells of two London children, Carrie (Cindy O'Callaghan) and Charlie (Ian Weighall), sent to stay in the country with an aunt (Landsbury), during World War II. They discover that she is an apprentice Witch. Their hilarious adventures, as she tries to use her powers to fight the Germans, lead them to aid in the war effort. There is no true Witchcraft, but it is a fun story for children and adults alike, with no negativity about the Craft. The film includes an excellent underwater episode, with live action combined with animation.
