The river empties into the IJsselmeer, the southern part of the Zuider Zee, after flowing through a plain in an embanked channel. The mean flow rate is approximately 280 cu m per sec, and the maximum flow rate is approximately 2,000 cu m per sec. In the winter the water level rises 4–7 m. The IJssel is navigable for its entire length. A network of canals connects it with the northern and eastern parts of the country.
