A human correlate of adjuvant disease of animals, which was first described in the mid-1960s in Japanese women who had undergone injections of silicone, paraffin and other unknown materials into their breasts. HAD may represent a complication of systemic leakage of silicone, and may be accompanied by rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, malignant hypertension and other manifestations of chronic connective tissue disease. Up to 1/2 of females with silicone breasts implants have circulating anti-collagen antibodies.
